Reclaiming Desert

I often watch TED talks and was recently fascinated by this one by Allan Savory, a biologist, ecologist and “holistic manager” of grasslands.

Reversing desertification – land turning to desert – has become his life mission after he made a terrible mistake in his early career as a biologist; while setting up national parks in Africa the land set aside began to deteriorate and it was blamed on elephants…

With a simple – oh SO simple – method, much desertification can be reversed with stunning speed. Climate CAN be changed – to the positive! If we can change microclimates on a large scale, we are changing macroclimate.

I found this talk informative, revealing and also very moving. So if you get a chance over the weekend, do take a look.

Allan Savory: How to green the desert and reverse climate change

  1. Thank you and hope you do not mind my sharing! This is SO important for the todays and tomorrows . . . and it is more than frightening to see the whole of Australia included in the affected areas . . . as if many of us did not know!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this, Cathy. This is a topic of concern near and dear to me, and it’s so rare that anything hopeful is proposed. I have been writing about the overuse of natural resources in California and the effect on the climate change. Sometimes I lose heart! This weekend I’m going to a series of homes part of a garden tour that is matched to homes registered for their use of drought tolerant, native plants and grasses. Sometime soon I’ll post on it, and hope you catch it. I think you’d appreciate the landscape in our “desert” environment. 🙂

    • I’ll look forward to that Debra – hope the tour offers hope. We can’t ignore this problem for much longer, so I’m glad you’re writing about it. 😀

  3. Wow! Thank YOU for sharing. I’ll definitely be sharing with people. My family actually has a ranch and raise cattle (naturally, no hormones, antibiotics) and we live in a semi-arid part of the U.S. I’m sure this will be fascinating to them as they are usually under much pressure from the government regarding livestock and federal range lands. You discover such interesting topics helping us all be more aware!

    • I’m glad you can pass this along. As your parents may have experienced, many “new” ideas like alternative farming methods, or windpower, meet with a lot of criticism. And it seems there are many skeptics about Allan Savory’s research too. Yet it is so logical!
      Thanks for your comment Andrea!

  4. I watched this entire video and am forever changed. Thank you Cathy for spreading the word on this brillance. I am inspired and so very encouraged. This makes so much sense. I will add this to my list of so very important causes that I will write about. I hope you don’t mind if I share this on Twitter and Facebook.

    • I’m very glad that you feel inspired to write about this some time – please do share – that’s the whole point of these TED talks I believe. Have a wonderful weekend Strawberryindigo!

  5. Interesting. I came away with a million questions, but I do hope that this method will be increasingly used. Where I live is on the cusp of desertification, and I’m glad to know about some positive changes that can be made in that regard. Food for thought, and the wheels in my mind are turning!
