Three cheers for Cathy at Rambling in the Garden!
Today we are celebrating the third anniversary of her wonderful meme ‘In a Vase on Monday’, which has inspired me and many other bloggers from all over the world to go out into their gardens or the countryside each week to gather materials for a vase to share. Come rain or shine. Snow or heatwave. Summer or Winter.
Not only has this meme changed the way I look at my garden, it has also influenced my choices regarding what to sow and grow, ensuring that I have flowers or foliage for indoors almost all year round.

Cathy has chosen a theme for today’s celebration : THREE
I think the easiest way to interpret that would be to create three different vases, so my tube vases seemed ideal. I think Cathy will approve of the flowers I used: a common favourite is Persicaria ‘Red Dragon’ on the left, with Persicaria ‘Blackfield, then Persicaria ‘Lance Corpoal’ in the centre, and my stalwart Persicaria ‘Firetail’ on the right.
Sorry I can’t send you the chocolate cherry brownie Cathy! (I am sure it will find a good home though, and I will post the recipe soon! 😉 )

I also chose three of my favourite vases from the last year as part of the celebration…

I agree totally Eliza! I love the image I have in my head of us all going out on a Sunday or Monday with our shears and trugs or buckets (me in my pink gardening shoes or wellington boots) umming and aahing about what to cut and then pondering over the right vase to use! 😀

Great choice of vase (s). This meme really has changed us hasn’t it? I hardly ever picked flowers from the garden as I hated robbing the borders but being able to enjoy the flowers close up makes it worth it. the cake was a lovely idea!
And I used to think I didn’t have enough flowers to cut, so it has really helped me develop my garden so there is constantly something new to pick… even in November! 🙂
And a cake with candles! Wonderful!

It’s lovely to see the stalwart persicarias featuring – it says such a lot for their staying power and it’s good to reward them with this starring role. I haven’t seen Lance Corporal before but it’s a little like Painter’s Palette, I believe. You’re welcome Cathy! Yes, I didn’t initially realise you had used test tubes too! I suspect the Golfer helped out with the wooden Three? 😉 Painter’s Palette is very similar, but Lance Corporal has fresh green leaves with reddish brown patterns, not variegated like PP.
Ah yes, it wasn’t clear in your photo but I remember it now. And yes, the Golfer did as he was asked, as always!
Wonderful, what a perfect three-vases to celebrate. The brownie looks fabulicious and I enjoyed looking at that as much as the flowers! Perhaps next week’s theme could be ‘cake’???

Not sure what I like better, the Persicarias or the brownie. Thank you for showing the Persicarias, though – I have never seen them in the US and was having difficulties figuring out what they were.
😉 Another name for the Persicarias is Polygonum, which makes people shrink back in horror as so many of them are invasive! This sort is very well-behaved though! 😉

Persicarias were a great choice, but I must admit that my attention then wandered to that brownie. Yummy. You are so right that this meme has affected how we/I look about the garden and plan. Long may it continue.

I think Miscanthus would look lovely with your other grasses Amy. I buy almost all my plants online, as the local garden centres and nurseries are not terribly well-stocked or helpful!
What a nice review of such beautiful vases and arrangements, Cathy. I’m sorry it took me all week to come around. This hasn’t been a very easy week. You may have heard? LOL! I am regaining my composure and what a lovely way to rejoin the conversation. Over flowers! I hope you’ve had a good week and enjoy the coming weekend.
I can imagine the week has been quite turbulent over in your part of the world! The media have naturally made a feast of it here too. I love to retreat to the garden or the kitchen when I want to switch off and relax.. I will be baking a cake later today and cutting or at least planning my flowers for tomorrow’s vase, although it may be sparse as we had frost last night! 🙂 Have a lovely Sunday Debra!
