Ha, I wonder how many of you thought I would be showing a branch of apple blossom! Hope this is not a disappointment…
Hippeastrum ‘Apple Blossom’
This is my third Amaryllis this winter. The first one, Red Pearl, is flowering on a second stalk, and last week’s ‘Alfresco’ is still looking wonderful with another bud just showing.
Our snow has almost melted away and I can feel the first ache for some spring colour. Just a little green would be nice. Still, I have these lovely indoor plants to tide me over, and today I will be looking at all the other vases participating in Cathy’s meme. Well, the snow is almost gone and there are tiny green spikes in the ground… 🙂
This is perhaps my very favorite Hippeastrum, Cathy. (I’m kicking myself – again – for not planting more bulbs this year.) Seeing yours is a joy.
I know a few people who have grown this one and it never disappoints! Make a note on the calendar to yourself for next year. 😉

You just about fooled me – then I realized that was a favorite Amaryllis of mine. Just lovely. Spring is just around the corner.
There are now a few signs of spring here, but I still have one Amaryllis that hasn’t flowered yet, so there is no rush!

My Apple Blossom has turned out to be red! Still, they are so beautiful i can’t complain. I shall have to enjoy yours instead. I love the sugar-coated glisten on the petals. So pretty. Thanks for sharing

Well, the forecast is for lots of sunshine, so things will move along rapidly now. I hope the fruit trees don’t get caught out by a late frost again!

I have an Appleblossom too, still in bud, so I wasn’t fooled by your teasing, either, Cathy! I haven’t grown that variety before so I am pleased to see how pretty yours looks and I do so hope you can start to see some green outside soon.
There are some tiny green shoots out there in the bare patches where the snow has melted… crocus and mini narcissi I think! 🙂

This was one of my first three amaryllis years ago. The big single whites are still my favorite, but I had to try this because I am a sucker for names, and ‘Apple Blossom’ is one of those names that I ‘needed’ to grow.
I love the white ones too. And I had one that was almost all green a few years ago and it was gorgeous.
This is the time of year when I see them in pots on porches around the neighborhood. Once they finish bloom, and develop foliage, most get forgotten about. How sad. Some will keep snails happy for a while.

I like the white ones more and more but thus was a nice spring-like colour. Red is great at Christmas, but getting them to flower when you want is practically impossible! 😉

Apple blossom still seems a way off yet even though it has been spring like here for the last couple of days. I was wandering around the garden at 4.30pm without a coat!
It was sunny and warm enough to sit outside today – for five minutes, before we felt the chill from the ground! 🙂

I love this amaryllis cultivar – the colour is so cheerful. I grew it one year and will have to do so again – I usually gravitate towards the dark red ones but this is such a treat.
I am fond of red at Christmas, but the lighter colours are perfect for a taste of spring colour. 🙂
I say this about nearly every Amaryllis, but Apple Blossom really is my all time favorite (I think!). It’s such a perfect, pure, pink! I can’t wait until mine blooms! Do you save your Amaryllises from year to year, or start with new bulbs each year? I find I almost always get two stalks, or sometimes even three (!) on new bulbs, but I’ve never had more than one flower stalk on an old bulb.
Hi Kimberley! I am gradually becoming more a fan of this one too, but the white one I grew this year was also lovely. I have tried keeping the bulbs, but only once got a flower, otherwise just masses of leaves! I invest in a few bulbs each winter and find them well worth the few euros. Hope your Apple Blossom flowers soon. 🙂 Spring is not far off, so hope to see an update of your garden soon too. 🙂
My gardens are still under a few inches of snow, and we expect about 10 new inches tomorrow night! Hopefully by the end of March I’ll see some crocuses, like the lovely one you highlighted the other day!
And yes, that white one was gorgeous too. I have a white one called Picotee that has a very narrow red edge on the petals. It reminds me of an Easter lily, but without the allergy inducing scent, so I try to get it to bloom for Easter each year. (Seldom successfully!)
