I am joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for her Monday meme while also bathing in the glorious shower of flowery photos being posted on my Week of Flowers. I am a little behind with visits and comments, but as I write it is already getting dark and I will spend another pleasurable evening poring over my iPad, wrapped up in a blanket with a big mug of tea. 😃
My vase today is simple: an Allium seedhead
Actually, to be precise, Allium ‘Mount Everest’.
I found a lovely poem praising the Allium, and here is the opening line and a link to the full poem. It is rather charming, and by a poet I didn’t know of until now, Denise Levertov:
In Praise of Allium by Denise Levertov No one celebrates the allium. The way each purposeful stem ends in a globe, a domed umbel, makes people think, ‘Drumsticks,’ and that’s that.https://voetica.com/voetica.php?collection=2&poet=821&poem=7919
And this is what the Allium looked like when it was in flower. Only one remains standing now, but I managed to save a couple for vases. 😃
Have a lovely week everyone!
Lovely, Cathy. Beautiful in every season.
Thanks Susie!
That is a great dried flower.
This one lasted pretty well, some of them blackened a little.
Simple and sweet, Cathy! I’ve managed to get a couple of Alliums to bloom here, although their numbers appear to decrease with each passing year. However, I did manage to save 2 dried stems earlier this year, which extends the joy they brought me.
Exactly – ‘extending the joy’ is an excellent way of describing it. 😃
A great celebration of allium, both in your vase and that intriguing poem – thanks for sharing both
Thanks Cathy. I was actually searching for sayings and old wives’ tails about onions and found that poem! 😃
Bees do go crazy over alliums, and the dried heads are beautiful. Being deer resistant, no reason not to keep planting more!
The mice leave them alone too. Perhaps I should focus on them more…
Love it, also love your containers.
Thank you!
What a beautiful bloom, and then dried seed head. It looks like it could be a Christmas ornament! 🙂
I have in fact heard some people spray them with gold paint to use as a Christmas decoration! 😉
Oh my! How delightfully silly! I wold be concerned that it would fall over and break the vase though.
😉 The Allium is very light as it has dried out completely, and the vase is pretty heavy!
Cathy forgives me for not joining the flower week but I feel very bad. Your dried allium is divine, I love it. It looks wonderful in that beautiful vase. I’m glad you’re happy wrapping gifts for your family. That you continue in that state of mind. Happy advent Very affectionate greetings from Margarita.
Thank you Margarita. I hope you feel better soon. 😃🌷🦔
