This year I am joining Lucy at Loose and Leafy in following a tree, and I am posting monthly about my Field Maple (Acer campestre) which stands at the bottom of our garden.
~~~
Look up, look up, at any tree!
There is so much for eyes to see:
Twigs, catkins, blossoms; and the blue
Of sky, most lovely, peeping through…
Despite some really warm days the leaf buds are only just showing signs of development. I can’t wait to see the leaves unfurl.
The other members of the Acer family in my garden are just as far on or even a little further ahead; the Acer pseudoplatanus (Sycamore)…
the Acer tataricum (Amur Maple)…
and the Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple)…
Between the 7th and 14th of each month you can link in with your tree at Loose and Leafy. Dozens of people from all over are taking part, so why not join in!
Are you seeing any leaf growth yet?
Your tree has a pretty shape. In SC, we are a bit ahead of you. Our tree canopy is coming on very quickly now.
There are just a few green shoots on the trees but we can already notice the difference when we look up at the wooded hillsides!
I love that time of year when you begin to get the green flush on the hillsides again. It really makes the return of spring official 🙂
It’s getting greener by the minute here Frank! If only I had time to sit and just watch those leaves unfurl! 😉
Trees are coming into leaf so quickly now, it is so exciting. Next month your Field Maple will be clothed in fresh new green.
I can notice a difference each day now Chloris. Yes, it is exciting – quite a magical time! 🙂
We’ve been noticing how the trees are filling out now, still light green with fresh new growth.
It’s lovely seeing all those shades of green again, isn’t it!
I didn’t know there was a Sycamore Maple. Our trees are also just starting to bud and I’m feeling impatient to see the leaves.
I know the feeling. I always thought gardeners were supposedly patient, but I can’t wait either!
I love acers…mine flower before they bud and leaf….
I’m watching mine so closely Donna, I bet there will be some surprises!
Your grass is green! Here it is brown, brown, everywhere. 🙂 The poplars and aspens are just getting ready to leaf out and many other trees are fat with buds.
And getting greener by the minute! I even cut our small lawn at the weekend. 🙂
The words of the poem are very true, we are so busy walking by we fail to look up and notice the trees.
I agree. It is hard to not see the daily changes here though as we are surrounded by trees!
Sometimes the anticipation is just as exciting as when the leaves open Cathy 🙂 Here the leaves are evident on some trees but many others have still to unfurl. I’m in Cumbria this morning where it’s further behind than at home. I look forward to meeting your tree again next month.
Thank you Anna. I should think my tree will be ‘dressed’ by the time you meet it again…. hope so anyway! Everything is turning green here too now – just the last few days have made a difference.
Our magnolias are getting very close to blooming–counting the days now!!! Enjoy your vigil!
My neighbour has a Magnolia tree and it should be opening any day now too! 🙂 Thanks Lori! Keep watching those buds! 😉
Definitely green on some of the trees and just recently a lot of blossom.
I noticed today the blackthorn will be flowering any day now. That is a sure sign of the woods waking up!
It’s seems that our neighborhood trees greened almost overnight. A few weeks ago everything was brown and grey and bare, today everything has filled in! Your tree is so very symmetrical. It will look beautiful when totally filled in.
It has really started to get greener over the last few days here too. Doesn’t it happen quickly!
To answer your question: yes, a lot, but that’s hardly surprising in central Texas in the middle of April.
Not surprising at all! Last month there was an article in my gardening magazine about the wild flowers of Texas and I recognized them all from your blog, making it even more interesting for me to read! 🙂
Happy recognition!
Cathy, thank you for your tree update. We too have an Acer, but I’ll have to look up the specifics. Ours leafed out quickly this year in what seemed like an overnight sensation. They’re extraordinary trees, aren’t they?
We have many different acers here and I am hopefully going to be able to recognize them and learn some more names by the end of this tree watching year! Everything is now a lot greener than last week – it certainly does seem to happen overnight doesn’t it! Have a great week Alys!
